新亞夜校是新亞書院大學部學生在1952年創辦的義務性小學。當時,書院所在的深水埗區內兒童失學問題嚴重,加上哲學教育系的學生未有實習經驗,所學的教育知識只流於理論。因此,為了向許多有志讀書,卻苦無經濟能力的兒童提供學習機會,並讓哲教系學生得到實踐理論的機會,列航飛先生、唐端正先生等學生決意成立一所義務學校。
新亞夜校於1952年2月1日正式成立,並獲教育司批准免辦「商業登記」。夜校借用新亞書院在桂林街的教室上課,上課時間為每晚七至九時。教員由書院大學部的同學擔任,而學生則全是貧民子弟。他們多為超齡學童,反映兒童失學問題的嚴重性。夜校提出四大校訓:「孝父母」、「敬師長」、「愛同學」、「勤學業」,務求令同學瞭解為學與做人同屬一事,藉此養成高尚品德。
然而,夜校成立之初,常要面對經費不足的問題。夜校的運作主要靠同學們的學費來支撐,但為了令更多貧苦學生可以上學,低年級學生和成績優異者不需繳交學費,中年級和高年級學生需要繳交每月二至三元學費。然而,中年級和高年級學生人數不多,加上多為貧苦家庭出身,未必能夠負擔每月的學費。而夜校的老師又不會強人所難,故僅能勉強維持學校運作。幸得書院每月津貼十五元,又免收租金,只需每月繳付電費即可。夜校並得其他書院同學熱心捐助,得以持續運作。
雖然夜校環境頗為簡陋,但對師生而言,新亞夜校就是一個溫暖的大家庭。夜校不時舉辦旅行和聯歡會,聯絡師生感情。一次,夜校舉行聯歡會,胡栻昶先生在遊戲中輸了三次,學生興奮地討論如何懲罰他,最終胡先生要唱一首歌才能回到座位。又有一次,一位學生假裝弄丟書包,要老師替她尋找,老師發現自己被騙時,只能無奈地相顧微笑。足以反映師生關係甚為融洽。
