DETAILS

The current emblem of New Asia College is engraved on this College Badge. The earliest version of New Asia’s emblem, designed by Tong Duen-ching (Philosophy and Education/1953) as a student, features a flag and a map of Asia. In 1955, the College sought a new design for its emblem. Reproducing the image of Confucius asking Laozi about manners, as found in an excavated Han Dynasty tomb, the design by student Wong Cho-chi (Literature and History/1956) was adopted, with a prize of HK$100. The Chinese characters ren wen (人文; humanity) in the middle of Wong’s original design was changed to cheng ming (誠明; sincerity and intelligence) – the College’s motto, derived from The Doctrine of the Mean – and the altered emblem has been in use since then. The emblem symbolizes New Asia College’s commitment to Chinese culture, with an emphasis on courtesy in Confucianism.
