Service-learning

The Chines University of Hong Kong (CUHK) introduces a new credit-bearing service-learning programme to extend students’ learning outside the classroom and to serve the local community. New Asia College will launch this programme in 2025/26 academic year as compulsory course of College General Education.

 

The programme collaborates with a wide range of community partners to provide opportunities for students to get in touch with underprivileged groups and related social issues. Students will apply practical subject knowledge and learn through taking part in services. They will be equipped with knowledge and skills to address community needs through service delivery, lectures, group presentation and individual reflective papers. Through the programme, students are encouraged to reflect on personal development and develop a caring sense to the community.

 

Learning outcomes:

  • Practically apply subject knowledge to contribute to the community.
  • Critically reflect on and deepen disciplinary knowledge.
  • Enhance students’ civil engagement skills and responsibilities.
  • Facilitate students’ personal development such as a sense of personal efficacy, personal identity, moral development, etc.
  • Improve students’ communication, cooperation, and leadership skills.
  • Encourage cultural and racial understanding, and enhance social cohesion through shared values.
  • Encourage collaboration between students and general public on social well-being.

 

To address student needs and social development, the College’s service-learning General Education programme will provide courses covering the categories below:

 

A. Chinese Culture

With the commitment of New Asia College to promote Chinese culture and values, the programme aims to enhance students and the public’s understanding of traditional culture and history, enabling the inheritance of Chinese culture.

 

B. Diversity and Inclusion.Social Cohesion

Hong Kong is a diversified society. Through the programme, students can understand and appreciate cultures and values of different communities. They would be equipped with communication skills and caring attitudes, thereby fostering community cohesion and creating a harmonious society.

 

C. Sustainable Development

Students will learn about local and global sustainable development issues and challenges. By engaging in it, students are encouraged to change their personal lifestyle, and assist in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on environmental conservation and good health.

 

D. STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics)

STEAM education has become a global educational trend. Students can apply inter-disciplinary knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and innovative skills to inspire local primary and secondary students, laying a foundation for their involvement in Hong Kong’s future development in innovation and technology.
