College Head Prof. Hector Sun-On Chan was appointed as Associate Vice-President (Education), CUHK

CUHK has approved the appointment of our Head Prof. Hector Sun-On Chan as Associate Vice-President (Education) on a concurrent basis for three years, with effect from 1 August. Prof. Chan will strive to enhance the quality of teaching and learning at the University, and further develop the unique collegiate education system of CUHK.

Prof. Chan is an alumnus of our College. He obtained his BSc degree in Biology in 1986, and MPhil degree in Anatomy in 1988 from CUHK. He was awarded the Croucher Foundation Scholarship to pursue a DPhil degree in Neuroscience at The University of Oxford in 1988.

Upon returning to Hong Kong after graduation, Prof. Chan started to teach in the Department of Anatomy (now School of Biomedical Sciences) at CUHK in 1991 and serve the College in 1992. His senior postings in our College include Dean of Students and Associate College Head, and he has been appointed the 13th Head of the College from 1 January 2021.

In teaching and researching area, the major research interests of Prof. Chan include development of neural connections in the brain, and protection of the eye in degenerative and inflammatory diseases. His contributions in teaching are recognized and exemplified by a number of awards in medical education, which include ten Teacher of the Year Awards and one Master Teacher Award in 2005 from Faculty of Medicine, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award in 2012 from CUHK. He is now Professor and Associate Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences.
