Story of Chinese Ink in the Mountain Town – Gongbi Painting Programme

Chinese painting is traditionally divided into two major styles: xieyi (freehand) and gongbi (meticulous). While many are familiar with expressive ink painting and landscapes painting, the detailed and realistic gongbi style reached its peak during the Song dynasty, leaving behind many masterpieces. This course focuses on the study of gongbi bird-and-flower painting. Students will learn how to use traditional tools and materials, master brush and ink techniques, and apply colour in the classical style. Beyond appreciating the aesthetic of gongbi painting, students will also be guided to create their own artworks using this refined technique. With the beautiful surroundings of CUHK’s campus—full of birdsong and blooming flowers—there’s inspiration everywhere. Have you ever imagined capturing that poetic scenery through the elegance of gongbi? To wrap up the course, students will collaborate to curate an exhibition, showcasing their creative achievements and experiencing the full journey of an artist—from creation to presentation.

All undergraduates and full-time CUHK staff are welcome (Priority for New Asia students)!
