【New Asia Now and Then – First Issue of Report on New Asia College】

Report on New Asia College was a publication initiated by early students of the College and the first issue was published today 69 years ago (1 June 1952). It was the only publication by the College back then and the editorial board were all students. Mr. Tchang Pikai later recounted in the inaugural issue of New Asia Life Magazine, “In order to motivate ourselves and to report to the society what we have done, a handful of students shouldered the responsibility of editing and printing the College publication. The professors only acted as mentors. Duties including finding donations, writing, editing and distribution were shared among students.”

The title of the first issue was inscribed by Mr. Chien Mu. On 16 April 1952, Mr. Chien got hit on the head by a fallen brick during a talk in Taipei. The inscription was done during his recuperation. He mentioned in a letter on 18 May, “Learning that New Asia students has started a publication brought me immense joy on my sick bed. I’ll send you an inscription of the title to commemorate this special moment.”

Not only students but also teachers and alumni would contribute to the publication. Topics spanned from academic articles, student works, teachers’ messages, campus life, to alumni updates and College news. Its operation relied entirely on the donations from teachers and students, and acknowledgements were published as a thank you.

Nine issues in total were printed until 15 July 1957, two issues per year. Some of them also served as special graduation issues which included students’ graduation photos. This approach was continued in New Asia Life Magazine.

Mr. Tchang Pikai later founded New Asia Life Biweekly Magazine in May 1958. The Report then became the New Asia College Academic Annual, an academic publication administered by College professors.
